Architecture in circulation: the Kigali Convention Centre on the 5000 RWF banknote

In Rwanda, architecture is image, symbol, and cultural infrastructure. This is demonstrated by the 5000 RWF banknote, where the Kigali Convention Centre (KCC) appears not merely as a building, but as a national emblem. Currency becomes a narrative device that translates architecture into a graphic sign, while the physical building provides function, complexity, and urban presence. On the banknote, the KCC is depicted as a layered dome rendered with concentric lines and vibrant colors: a concise image that captures the essence of the project, using the circular form as a symbol of unity and modernity. In reality, the dome is an articulated volume that reinterprets traditional Imigongo huts and vernacular techniques; at night, multicolored LED strips transform it into a landmark visible from across the Kimihurura hill.

The complex was designed in 2004 by the German team Spatial Solutions, led by architect Roland Dieterle, and completed in 2016. It is a convention center structured around a large dome and an adjacent hotel block. The dome’s load-bearing structure is a shell system consisting of overlapping rings on a composite steel and reinforced concrete frame. The main volume, with a diameter of approximately 60 meters, is composed of horizontal louvers that generate its characteristic visual layering; the geometry was optimized through parametric modeling, which allowed control over curvature, jointing, and level continuity.

Next to the dome appears the mountain gorilla, a symbol of Rwandan biodiversity. The dialogue is immediate: nature and modernity, heritage and future. The physical building performs the same symbolic function, hosting international conferences, political summits, and cultural gatherings. It serves as a bridge between Rwanda and the world — a venue where contemporary diplomacy is shaped. These days, it is hosting the 20th global edition of the AFSForum 2026 (Africa Food Systems Forum), confirming its global vocation.

The decision to feature the KCC on the banknote reflects an identity strategy: urban modernization as a national manifesto. The image emphasizes the project’s symbolic dimension, while the architecture itself reveals its shell structure, ventilated facade, and the contemporary reinterpretation of local materials. What appears on the banknote as a denomination — 5000 RWF— translates in the physical building into cultural capital, helping to redefine Kigali as an emerging city on the African landscape. The message is coherent: the banknote abstracts and encodes; the building expands and embodies. Together, they tell the story of a nation using architecture to build identity, from the urban scale to the graphic scale. The Kigali Convention Centre is not just a building: it is a symbol circulating through the hands of millions of people, a fragment of architecture that enters wallets and daily life, serving as a reminder of how much has been achieved from 1994 to the present day.
